In the most famous verse of the Bible, a close friend of Jesus describes why Jesus is important.
He says, "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son (Jesus), his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again." - John 3:16,17
Jesus was born in Bethelehem (which we celebrate at Christmas) and grew up in Nazareth, Israel. Jesus was born to Mary and Joseph, but is God's son, sent to the world, to bring as many people as possible into a close relationship with their creator.
Initially everyone knew God, but over time people grew distant from Him, and so Jesus was sent to encourage people to connect with God once more.
It was out of love, that God acted through Jesus, and in love Jesus acted to bring us close to God. Jesus did this in a way that would deal once and for all with everything that separates us from God. He did this by paying the utimate price for the wrong that we do - through his death on the cross. Therefore he saved us, so that we can live with God forever.
Living as a Christian is not always easy, even though we know that we have been saved by all that Jesus did. That is why we have the Bible.
